Abdul Jabbar (transliteration: ʿAbdul Jabbār, Arabic: عبد الجبار) is an Arabic name for boys that means “servant of the Almighty”, “servant of the Omnipotent”, meaning “servant of God”, since al-Jabbār is one of the names of God in Islam.1 The name is made up of the words ʿabd (“servant”, “slave”)2 and the name of God al-Jabbār. Due to the way the Arabic language works, when pronouncing the name ʿabd al-Jabbār becomes ʿabdul Jabbār.
Abdul Jabbar may also be spelled as Abdul Jabar, Abdol Jabar, Abdel Jabbar, Abd al-Jabbar, Abd al-Jabar, Abd el-Gebar and Abd el-Jabar, among others.
There are three Companions of the Prophet Muhammad named Abdul Jabbar:
- Abdul Jabar bin al-Harith عبد الجبار بن الحارث
- Abdul Jabar bin Shihab عبد الجبار بن شهاب
- Abdul Jabar bin al-Ward عبد الجبار بن الورد
