Abdul Hamid (Name)

Abdul Hamid (transliteration: ʿAbdul Ḥamīd, Arabic: عبد الحميد) (not to be confused with Abdul Hamed) is an Arabic name for boys that means “servant of the Praiseworthy”, meaning “servant of God”, since al-Ḥamīd is one of the names of God in Islam.1 The name is made up of the words ʿabd (“servant”, “slave”)2 and the name of God al-Ḥamīd. Due to the way the Arabic language works, when pronouncing the name ʿabd al-Ḥamīd becomes ʿabdul Ḥamīd.

Abdul Hamid should not be confused with Abdul Hamed. The difference is that Abdul Hamid ends with an emphasis on “mid” part (pronounced like the English word “mead”), while in Abdul Hamed the word Hamed has its emphasis on the first syllable (i.e. “Haa”), ending with a short “mid” sound, somewhat like the “mid” in the English word “middle”.

Abdul Hamid may also be prounced Abd al-Hamid, Abdul Hameed, Abdel Hameed, Abd el-Hemid and others.

There are six Companions of the Prophet Muhammad named Abdul Hamid:

  • Abdul Hamid bin Jubair عبد الحميد بن جبير
  • Abdul Hamid bin Hafs عبد الحميد بن حفص
  • Abdul Hamid bin Khattab bin al-Harith عبد الحميد بن خطاب بن الحارث
  • Abdul Hamid bin Raafi` عبد الحميد بن رافع
  • Abdul Hamid bin Abdullah عبد الحميد بن عبد الله
  • Abdul Hamid bin Amr عبد الحميد بن عمرو
