Are Nouman Ali Khan’s teachings too liberal and unauthentic?

Salam Alikoum akhi. A lot of Islamic knowledge, even more Quranic knowledge I've acquired is through Ustadh Nouman Ali Khan. SubbhanAllah he was an answer to a dua I made when I was considering leaving the deen all together. His lectures helped me see Islam from a completely different light and it's beautiful and it reasonated with me. Like I felt that his approach was inclusive to all humans and not just Muslims. However, I've faced the struggle (1)

of others saying he is just a liberal Muslim and how they accuse him of having weak background and that he is lying, and is very biased. This has taken a toll of me because I abandoned his programs and I honestly felt very confused. the knowledge I’m aquiring now is very inconsistent, contradictory and very insensitive… And it’s hard for me who don’t know where to start. I don’t want to be a hypocrite to just follow the scholar that suits me but to also follow haqq but it has drained me. (2)

Alaikumassalam wa rahmatullah,

I do not know too much about Nouman Ali Khan, but he seems to be reasonably respected and mainstream and everything he says can probably be found in the books of respected classical scholars like Fakhr al-Din al-Razi. Those who attack respected mainstream teachers and scholars are a small but very loud minority of people who have come under the influence of the Wahhabi flavor of Ḥanbalī Islam (which is spread by Saudi propagandists on the Internet and in countries like Pakistan). To them Islam should function like a cult where everyone is forced to agree with everyone else according to the strict criteria they define. For more on them please see my essay:

Salafism, Wahhabism and Mainstream Islam

For more on how Islam is meant to function (which is quite opposite to what they think), please see my essay:

And God knows best.
